Machico
Our opinion about Machico
The second biggest city on the island of Madeira, Machico is a hidden gem. Not hugely well known, it’s a quieter little sister to the buzz of Funchal, but has plenty to entertain all kinds of visitors.
Stories pour from the walls and a visit to the island wouldn’t be complete without picking up a bit of local history at the 15th century Mother Church, or the 17th century forts of Nossa Senhora do Amparo or Sao Joao Baptista.
The marina in the town is a popular spot to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by, while the beaches beyond are a top sandy retreat and a place to top up your tan. The waterfront is paved and makes a great choice for a pre-dinner walk. The town itself has a great selection of restaurants where you can spend an evening sampling local delicacies.
