Our opinion about Funchal

A buzzing city with the perfect mix of island mentality, great hotels and fantastic facilities. The capital of the island Madeira, Funchal has seen something of a Renaissance recently, having shaken off it’s old fashioned tag.

Boasting some of the best partying you’ll find, the city is all about summer festivals and street parties, and the best in leaving your troubles packed up at home. Among the Carnival, Flower Festival and the Madeira Wine Festival there is a lot on offer. They are all top choices if you fancy dancing all night, and soaking up the sunshine all day.

Outside Funchal, there is still plenty of opportunity if all night partying isn’t your thing. The picturesque countryside is made for hiking or walking, simply follow the network of levades, a series of ancient canalas built to bring water from one side of the island to the other. Then of course there are the beaches. Because the island is so small you could travel to a new beach every day and you should, they are beautiful.
