Carcavelos
Our opinion about Carcavelos
Situated west of Lisbon, Carcavelos is a cosmopolitan seaside town with a famous long stretch of sandy beach, dominated mainly by the Fort of Sao Jilao de Barra. Once a political prison, the Fort is now an environmentally friendly guest house, with an outdoor pool and lovely views. The beach it backs boasts small waves that are perfect for surfing, particularly during the summer months.
Carcavelos was also once very well-known for its sweet wine, which was made famous in 1782 when the King of Portugal sent it to the Emperor of China as a gift. If you plan on staying in this lovely destination, be sure to check out the Thursday morning market, located between the train station and the town centre, which specialises in cheap, but good quality clothing.
