Cruise Details

Canary Islands & Madeira Cruise – Magellan

Four contrasting Atlantic islands beckon on this wonderful autumn escape south to warmer climes. This delightful voyage has time at sea to relax, unwind and enjoy the wide choice of facilities on board Magellan. And yet it promises a host of exciting experiences every time you step ashore. Beautiful Madeira and the ever-popular Canary Islands of Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria will, together with Gibraltar and Lisbon, make this a voyage to remember.

Main stops of your itinerary:

Amsterdam - Netherlands

With more bicycles than permanent residents, the Dutch capital is both charming and quirky. Aesthetically little has changed in the centre since its 17th century Golden Age. Beautiful gabled houses and merchants’ mansions line serene, tree-lined canals, which are laid out in five concentric circles and crossed by numerous bridges. The Royal Palace, originally built as a Town Hall in the 17th century, stands on a large square in the centre of the city. Considered one of Europe’s major art capitals, Amsterdam is home to a number of superb galleries and museums including the famous Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.

Gibraltar (BCC)

Famously contested, Gibraltar is a renowned headland in the Mediterranean Sea.
In ancient times known as the Pillars of Hercules with it’s African counterpart, Mt Abyla, the Rock has remained under British rule for the last 300 years, despite being connected to Spain.
A towering 1400 ft outcrop that separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic, Gibraltar was named Jebel al-Tarik by the Moorish General Tarik who landed there in 711 AD.
See the famous Barbary apes that occupy the island as well as St Michael’s Cave and the Siege Tunnels or admire the view to Africa from a cable car.

Arrecife – Lanzarote

A city with maritime roots, Arrecife first appeared on maps in the 15th century as a small fishing harbour. It has since 1852 been the capital of Lanzarote, the northernmost and fourth largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. Lanzarote, which lies just four degrees north of the Tropic of Cancer and enjoys a sub-tropical climate, is volcanic in origin. Arrecife’s Calle Leon y Castila has a wealth of shops and is an opportunity for duty free shopping.

Las Palmas – Gran Canaria

Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria, the third largest of the seven main Canary Islands. With its sub-tropical climate, coastal valleys, beautiful sandy beaches and mountainous peaks, Gran Canaria is a firm favourite with visitors from all over Europe.
The city of Las Palmas lies in the north east corner of the Island and is dotted with tranquil parks and plazas festooned in floral displays. Head to the historic centre of Vegueta, steeped in traditional architecture and historical buildings which have been standing for over 500 years. There is also a myriad of fascinating museums to be explored, including the Christopher Columbus Museum and the Museo Canario, which contains the historical relics left by the former inhabitants of the Island.
A pleasant stroll away through the narrow streets is the 2½ mile long Playa de las Canteras beach, surrounded by calm sea and a natural barrier reef which makes for perfect snorkeling opportunities.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Tenerife

The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is dominated by Mount Teide in the central mountain range and several spectacular valleys covered with lush landscape, banana plantations and pinewoods. Santa Cruz, the island's capital, offers a number of museums, and churches to explore together with tempting shops and restaurants. The exotic gardens of Garcia Sanabria Park are worth a visit as is Loro Parque, with its tropical gardens, collection of parrots, and an aquarium with sharks, sealions and penguins.

Funchal – Madeira

Set in a magnificent natural amphitheatre overlooking a wide bay, Funchal is the delightful capital of the beautiful and dramatic island of Madeira. The harbour is right in the centre of town and as you approach the sight of whitewashed buildings with red tiled roofs tumbling down the verdant mountain is spectacular. A modern cable car soars above the bustling city to Monte, which is the start of Madeira’s famous wicker toboggan ride. Wicker baskets, embroidery and the famous Madeira wine are popular souvenirs from the striking island often described as the ‘floating garden of the Atlantic’.

Lisbon – Portugal

Lying on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the River Tagus, Lisbon is the westernmost capital in Europe. It was from here that the great caravels set sail on their voyages of exploration and numerous monuments are a reminder Lisbon’s glorious maritime heyday. In 1775 a devastating earthquake all but levelled the city to the ground, and although relatively modern, the Portuguese capital has a quirky charm and much character. The steep, cobbled streets of the ancient Moorish Alfama district lead to wonderful viewpoints looking over the city. Further along the coast the elegant resorts of Cascais and Estoril stud Portugal’s own Riviera.
