What do you get on a family holiday?

Family holidays differ in every hotel, resort and country you visit, but these are the most common package holidays on offer.

Kids Clubs: Organised adventures, theme days, treasure hunts, games and kid’s karaoke, most family friendly hotels offer kids clubs these days. Routine offers children and parents the most from holidays by taking out all of the stress involved.

Theme Parks: Some of our favourite family hotels offer theme parks in the resort, or very close by. Think of the legendary Disney theme parks or closer to home, PortAventura resorts in Spain. There are evolving theme parks all the time too, like the Lego Park in USA or Terra Mitica on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast.

Exotic family holidays: Head for the white beaches and turquoise waters of Mexico, where you can mix family beach fun with exploring the national treasures of Tulum and around Cancun. A world class family-holiday experience.

Beach holidays: It’s hard to beat the Greek Island of Crete for value and class on family friendly holidays. With chilled-out, shallow beaches, lots of accommodation and catering options and plenty of other families to meet up with, Crete has long topped the polls of Greece family friendly holidays.

History buffs: Combine your holiday with some history lessons to give kids a chance to learn something and relax at the same time. The Greek Islands offer plenty of day trips from resort, where you can uncover ancient ruins and get a peek into life in days long passed.

Luxury family holidays: Give the family a refreshing, relaxing sunshine holiday and more importantly some quality time together in one of our incredible luxury resorts. Dubai’s top notch service, or Cyprus beach front locations are superb choices for luxurious family getaways, where every whim is catered for and kid’s clubs don’t get much better.

Holidays with childcare: A broad range of childcare on family holidays abroad gives you the freedom to unwind knowing your kids are well cared for and entertained. Daily kids clubs and evening babysitting means you can spend lots of quality time together or go for a for a few drinks in the evening to unwind.

Holidays with teenagers: For the hard-to-please teenager in your life, there are surprisingly plentiful holiday options available. Sign them up for sailing, windsurfing or tennis lessons in Turkey. They can learn to scuba in the wonder of the Red Sea or try snowboarding or skiing in the French Alps. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, talk to the Purple Travel team now for more ideas about holidays with teenagers this year.

Safari Holidays: Adventure-loving families will adore safari holidays, an amazing opportunity to get close to nature and maybe even spark a lifelong interest in the environment. Kids and grownups can keep their eyes peeled for the Big Five: the African lion, African elephant, African leopard, white or black rhinos and the Cape buffalo. For an amazing family experience, ask Purple Travel about our safari holidays now.

Which family holiday is right for you?

All-inclusive: We know that it can be pricey taking the kids away for a summer holiday, especially if you have a big family. The solution to this might just be all-inclusive family holidays. That means you don’t have to worry about shelling out for meals, a snack or babysitting on holidays, you know it’s all taken care of before you travel. All-inclusive family holidays usually include flights, hotels, transfers as well as day trips, excursions, kid’s clubs and evening entertainment. All-inclusive with kids is even more convenient too, because you’ll meet other families enjoying the exact same perks. Children will love spending time with new friends, while mum and dad can relax with other parents sharing similar interests.

Self-catering: There are lots of benefits of self-catering family holidays. If you have children with special eating needs you, you’ll have your own kitchen to prepare meals and snacks. It’s also a great way to experience a country like a local. Visit the local market and stock up on invariably cheap, but great quality fruit and veggies, experiment in some nearby restaurants or just play it by ear with whatever takes your fancy. The beauty of self-catering holidays is that you can do it your way.

Single parent holidays: Nobody likes to pay extra on their holidays and it shouldn’t be any different for single parents who want to bring their little ones somewhere special. We have plenty of child-friendly offers from sun-drenched holidays on the Costa del Sol, chilled out beaches in Turkey and year round sunshine in the Canaries. Travelling on your own with small children can be tricky, take the hassle out of it with our friendly team.

How to survive family holidays this summer

An early start: We recommend allowing plenty of time for your journey to the airport. It can be stressful if things get off to a late start, and children can pick up on that. Keep stress at bay with some extra time for your journey, pay for your airport parking in. Some airports also offer family car parking facilities which you can organise before you leave the house.

When you arrive at the airport, remember that you’ll have luggage on top of the usual baby bags. Reins for runaway toddlers or a baby sling are good options for keeping an eye on everyone as you get ready to check in. Visit the airport’s website to find out where you can find family lounge facilities and child-friendly restaurants. In the unlikely event that your flight is delayed this info can make things go a lot smoother. If you want to bring baby food and/or baby milk on your flight, check with the foreign office website https://www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/overview as restrictions may be in place at the time of travel.

Boarding Check with your airline before you travel about their boarding policy. Each airline has different policies about boarding their aircraft with some offering special early boarding for families with children.

In flight Keeping children busy on a flight can be a number one priority. A few things to keep kids busy include, ipad/ipod, books, cuddly toys, snacks and good old fashioned notebooks and crayons. For smaller children giving them a bottle at take-off and landing will help with any pressure build up in their ears and keep them busy while they are stuck seat belted in their seats.

Always bring your European medical cards, because you simply never know!

Where to go on your next family holiday

Turkey: Great for last minute family holidays and family holiday deals, Turkey not only offers great weather but since it’s outside the Eurozone, there’s some extra value to be had on family holidays in Turkey. Relax in a private villa with your own pool, or head for an all-inclusive hotel in Bodrum or Kusadasi.

Spain: A good choice with very small kids, you can fly to Spain in just a few hours. Torremolinos, Marbella or Mijas offer family-friendly hotels, with nearby water parks, restuarants and golf courses, so there’s something to suit all members of the family on family holidays in Spain.

Barcelona: the affordable and bustling city of Barcelona is a cool choice for older children especially if you want a quick getaway on school holidays. They can soak up the culture of the Sagrada Familia or Park Guell and you can spend quality time together walking the city and discovering its secrets.

Crete: The Greek Islands in general offer a great selection of child-friendly facilities. There are interlocking family rooms and kids pools and entertainment in hotels or villas with fenced off pools where you can go self-catering and unwind.

Algarve: For holidaymakers heading off during high season, the Algarve is particularly well prepared. From crèche facilities to kids clubs, dedicated staff for children and other bits and pieces to make your holiday go a bit smoother.

Austria: for budding snowboard champions, the Austrian Tyrol is ideal for family ski holidays. There are plenty of discounts for children aged up to 11, lift passes and lessons are often included. Add to that, the incredible breath-taking beauty of the snow-capped mountains and community atmosphere and you’ve got the makings of a great value family ski holiday. Don’t forget that traipsing up and down a mountain all day will tire even the most energetic of us out, so everyone can expect a good night’s sleep.

Croatia: it might not immediately conjure images of family holidays, but Croatia’s warmth and charm make it a superb up-and-coming place to visit. With a rise in cheap flights too, you can hand pick hotels or apartments with a family friendly atmosphere.

Balearics: Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca are served by hundreds of flights ever week, there are superb beaches, and the three islands have a child-friendly, if lively reputation. You might want to steer clear of the party centres like Magaluf and San Antonio Bay.

Florida: A summer holiday in Florida is like a dream come true for kiddies, and it’s because of one word: Disney. The Magic Kingdom, SeaWorld and Universal Studios give the Sunshine State some edge over regular family holidays.

Mexico: Just exotic enough to be worth a long flight, Mexico family holidays are becoming ever more popular with British families thanks to super service, lots of child friendly food and entertainment options and ludicrously beautiful scenery. Mexico also has the history to go the distance with family holidays. Be sure to check out Chichen Itza or underground water holes, known locally as cenotes.
